Cricket, a gentleman's game, has been played in the United States since the late 1800s. One well-known cricket club in the New England area is St. Columba's Cricket Club. It was founded by the late Tony Fairchild in June of 1993 in Middletown RI. Mr. Fairchild, a former member of the St. Columba's Episcopal Church, was committed to improving and promoting the game of cricket in Rhode Island by peaking the interest of local people and church members to join in on friendly weekend games.
Today, SCCC is still running under the supervision of Captain Paresh Chhotu, Vice Captain Sandeep Reddy and other playing members. The team's season usually begins in April with net practice every Wednesday and Friday evening and the first friendly game starts between late April to mid May. Sometimes there are two games held during a weekend against seprate teams in the New England area. During each game the club has a tea break where snacks and beverages are served. Along with the food, the members of the teams and spectators get to socialize and enjoy the fun of Cricket. The close of the season is held on the first weekend in October with an invitational tournament. This tournament was first founded in 1995, when the University of Rhode Island Invitational tournament was abandoned, and St. Columba's Cricket Club decided to carry on the tradition of an end of season tournament in RI.
St.Columba's Cricket club is a healthy and rapidly growing organization with members from all different countries such as; Trinidad, England, India, Pakistan, Australia, Antigua, and USA. They have earned the respect of the local community by demonstrating the discipline and conduct required for the game of cricket. There are some players in the club who played the very first game when the club was formed and still take part today.
Today the team games are held on a private ground owned by Dr. Lewis Arnow. If you would like to be a part of St. Columba's Cricket Club, please contact Amit Sheth at amitabhsheth@yahoo.com or Chuck Zalewski at sckeeper@comcast.net. You can be a part of the yahoo group by subscribing below.
